A LONG STRANGE TRIP

These 1960's commercials featured a recurring character, Mr Whipple, who became somewhat of a celebrity due to saturated exposure. Anyone who watched even only a few TV shows knew who he was! For several years it didn't seem to matter to the manufacturer, Proctor & Gamble, that many people really grew extremely weary of seeing him in a multitude of these "Please don't squeeze the Charmin" promotions. There are 24 of them alone in the Duke University Archives created by the D'Arcy, Masius, Benton & Boweles advertizing agency. The first one here is typical of him chiding shoppers for something he can't resist doing himself when he thinks they aren't looking.
The second clip is perhaps an attempt to remedy this negativity because he doesn't appear, it's done in a new early color process and there is a ridiculous scene of a woman trying to be "happening" just like all the young hippies with two frat boys singing folk music! In the words of the Grateful Dead, "What a long strange trip it's been."
