LONDON BRIDGE HAS FALLEN CHEAP!

London Bridge Cutlery Set
England
Circa 1825
The stuff of nursery rhymes, this handsome and rare English set of 24 knives was crafted of oak timber taken from the first stone version of the famed London Bridge. Crafted by Weiss of London, the knives are beautifully decorated with repoussé caps, adorned with the City of London crest, and shields bearing an engraved armorial and the inscription “London 1176.” This date commemorates the beginning of construction of the stone bridge and the end of the fully wooden bridges.

Stamped “Weiss London” on blades

There have actually been several bridges known as London Bridge to cross the Thames River since the Roman occupation of the area, nearly 2,000 years ago. The Romans built the first, probably a military pontoon bridge, of wood on the present site around 50 AD. The bridge was built and rebuilt a number of times. In 1014 it was pulled down by the Norwegian prince Olaf, in an effort to aid Anglo-Saxon King Aethelred in dividing the defending forces of the Danes, who held the walled City of London plus Southwark, and regained London for the king. This episode has been thought to have inspired the well-known nursery rhyme. The fabled bridge continues to have a colorful history today. The stone bridge built in 1176 lasted until 1825, when work began on a new stone bridge that opened in 1831. It is from the wood of this bridge that these excellent knives are made. This second bridge was sold in 1968 to Robert P. McCulloch of McCulloch Oil for US $2,460,000, taken apart and reassembled stone by stone over Lake Havasu in Arizona.

BARBIE'S OUT OF WACK

If Barbie were human-size, she'd stand 6 feet tall with a 36-inch chest, an 18-inch waist, and 33-inch hips.
Galia Slayen, who once battled an eating disorder, wanted to know what a person with these dimensions would look like so she built a life-size Barbie. The result is a freakish-looking woman with spindly legs, a disturbingly skinny waist, and big boobs.

OVERTHETOP CLOCK

Fabulous Signed French Dore Bronze Pedestal Clock with Cherubs
France
20th century
Outrageous, over-the-top Barbedienne signed (image 4) French pedestal clock with a fabulous marquetry case, intricate gilt ormolu decorations, and frolicking cherubs, too. If you like showstopping beauty, look no farther as this is it! Perfect in most any room of the home, this phenomenal clock will take your breath away. Dynamite in a grand entry foyer, as a ob-jet d'art in the lavish living room, or announcing the hour in the formal dining room. Wherever you deem fit, this fine clock will undoubtedly enhance any room of the home.

The F. Barbedienne foundry was started in Paris in 1838 by Ferdinand Barbedienne and Achille Collas, who was the inventor of a machine that would mechanically reduce statues. They at first produced bronze reductions of antique sculptures of Greek and Roman origin. Their first contract to produce bronzes modeled by a living artist was made in 1843 when they arranged to produce the works of Francois Rude. They barely survived the revolution and financial collapse of 1848 which caused many artists and foundries to declare bankruptcy. Barbedienne actively pursued contracts with the many sculptors of Paris contracting with David D'Angers, Jean-Baptiste Clesinger, and even producing some casts for Antoine Louis Barye as well as others.

Achille Collas died in 1859 leaving Ferdinand Barbedienne as the sole owner of the foundry which by that time had grown to employ over 300 workers at their workshop located at 63 Rue de Lancry in Paris. Ferdinand Barbedienne was made the President of the Reunion of Bronze Makers in 1865 a post he held until 1885. The outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war in 1870 and the shortage of raw metals caused him to have to stop making sculptures but he did receive a contract from the French government for the production of cannons which kept his foundry open. After the war he resumed his casting of sculptures and put even more effort into signing contracts with various sculptors.

Barbedienne Purchased 125 casting models from the late Antoine Louis Barye's sale in 1876. He set about casting and selling editions of these sculptures which was very successful, devoting an entire catalogue to these works. Ferdinand Barbedienne died on March 21 1891 and was mourned by many in the world of sculpture. It was said that he strove to the highest quality in his castings Albert Susse said of him that he was the "pride of the nation" and that that he "carried the splendor of our industry so loftily to all international competitions". The running of the foundry was taken over by Gustave Leblanc, a nephew, and continued the high standards set by M. Barbedienne. The foundry set up agencies in Germany, Britain, and the United States to market their production. Leblanc actively purchased models and production rights form sculptors including Auguste Rodin and the estates of sculptures including Emmanuel Fremiet. The foundry continued under the stewardship of M. Leblanc until 1952.

NILE RIVER DELTA AT NIGHT

One of the fascinating aspects of viewing Earth at night is how well the lights show the distribution of people. In this view of Egypt, the population is shown to be almost completely concentrated along the Nile Valley, just a small percentage of the country’s land area. Image Credit: NASA

ANOTHER "BLACK SWAN"

Often, the most inspiring and beautiful creations come about as the result of a juxtaposition between the classical and the modern, the old and the new. Such is the case in this video, which was filmed by director Spike Jonze, that captures Los Angeles street dancer Lil Buck as he performs an amazing interpretation of “The Dying Swan” from Camille Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals with a live musical accompaniment by the award-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
